Kent Area AGM:  Saturday 5 February 2011

Around a hundred people attended our 27th AGM in Bexley, which several people described as our best ever.

Neville Machin welcomed members on behalf of Kent Area while Tim Wilson welcomed us on behalf of North West Kent, the hosting Group.

We moved swiftly through the usual formalities including:

  • Approving the minutes of the 2010 AGM without amendment
  • Receiving the Annual Report
  • Approving the accounts and Treasurer's report
  • Election of Officers (see below)

Despite numerous appeals, no one came forward for any of the Officer posts apart from the incumbents, who were therefore re-elected unopposed.  It is essential to the success of the Association that more people offer their time and skills to support our activities in Kent.  Now as much as ever, the quality of our footpath network depends on the Ramblers.

Peter Skipp proposed a vote of thanks to Ken Neville who was retiring as Area Communications Co-ordinator.  Ken explained that modern technology had made his role of printing and posting Area communications virtually redundant.

Robert Peel reported on progress with the motion that the 2010 AGM had sent to the 2010 General Council (the Ramblers' national AGM).  The motion, complaining of poor administration and financial monitoring, poor communication and lack of consultation on strategic direction had been combined with similar motions from two other Areas and was defeated by 59 votes to 60.  The closeness of the vote couple with election to the Board of Trustees of Robert himself and another candidate with similar views had resulted in all the concerns being at least partly addressed although there was still much more to be accomplished before Robert would be content.

David Gatward reported on actions taken following a motion at the 2010 AGM on the problem of barbed wire near stiles.

Ian Wild, the Ramblers' project manager for coastal access in Kent, gave an illustrated presentation of his work producing a complete survey of the Kent coastline and the issues that need to be addressed in order to achieve a complete coastal path.  He will be producing further reports with recommendations on how best to resolve these issues.  We will be posting the full reports elsewhere on the web site shortly.

All the Officers then dealt with numerous questions from the floor.
