Protecting Rights of Way

Dartford & Gravesham Group has long been active in protecting and enhancing the local rights of way network.  The following extract from the Group's 2003-04 annual report illustrates the commitment of the Group's volunteers.

Ingress Abbey, Greenhithe: After about six years of negotiation, this has been brought to a successful conclusion. We now have a new footpath along the foreshore from the Pier Hotel to Black Duck Marsh linking other footpaths, a separate cycle path, an historical walk showing around the old Abbey grounds and when the development is finally completed in a few years time, an alternative route through the site linking all footpaths. A claim for two extra footpaths is pending and should be successful.

Powder Mill Lane, Dartford: The developers failed to start work within the stipulated time and have now had to re-apply with another Planning Application. After a previous unsuccessful Public Inquiry, we are now better equipped to continue the fight to save our affected footpaths.

River Shuttle, Bexley: Another successful outcome when the river footpath was fenced off by BETHS Grammar School. It was eventually re-opened following discussions with the school, local councillors and the Council after an organised campaign with much local publicity.

Howbury Grange Rail Distribution Depot, Slade Green: Discussions are still taking place with Dartford and Bexley Councils regarding a new service road across the marshes with associated footpath and cycleway access.

Fastrack, Darenth Road/Central Park/Lowfield Street Development: Whilst these are three separate developments they are never the less inter-linked purely by the fact that footpaths and the Darenth Valley Path are affected. Discussions are proceeding with Kent CC and Dartford BC.

Springhead Park, Ebbsfleet: We successfully negotiated the re-alignment of four public footpaths which would have been lost to development.

A2M: The route for the new A2M is currently being commented upon regarding safe public access across it.

Please join the Ramblers to support this work.  Our volunteers need your encouragement.
