MEDWAY WINTER WALKS PROGRAMME

Please Note : Coffee, tea and lunch breaks will be taken as appropriate. Walkers are reminded to bring their own light refreshments as necessary, particularly on the longer walks. The length of breaks will be at the discretion of the leader. If you decide to leave a walk part of the way through please ensure that you have advised the leader of your intentions. Suitable walking attire should be worn.

Note: The Town shown below the walk date is the nearest town to the start, not necessarily the actual start point. The Post Code beneath the Grid Reference is the closest available to the start point (for Sat Nav users).

This is a linear walk. Walk starts at the Town Lock (GR TQ594464 Post Code TN9 1RE) near the Castle in Tonbridge at 10.15am. Park in Wateringbury rail station car park (free on Sundays) (GR TQ692528 Post Code: ME18 5EA) to catch 9.34am train to Tonbridge. (Alternatively, if you are late, you may park in roads near the Town Lock with hourly train service back from Wateringbury at the end of the walk). Walk is downhill all the way! Follows the River Medway out of Tonbridge and then through open country and edges of riverside villages. Locks and wildlife with a possible few late season boaters messing about on the river. Bring picnic. Pub at end.

Meet in car park in Upper Green Road opposite Shipbourne Church, just off the A227 at Shipbourne Common. A pleasant walk through woodland, farmland, in typical Kentish countryside via Four Wents, Hamptons and Roughway, Dunks Green. Pub at end. Pub lunches available.

Meet in front of the Dover Castle Inn (20 London Road) on the A2. Parking available in Station Road and associated local roads. We quickly leave the 'buzz'of the A2 to find tranquility on the lanes and byways of rural kent. We pass through Lewson Street, Newnham and Lynsted before returning to Teynham. 'Hidden Kent' - although there is a fair bit of road walking we walk through communities that are bypassed by the A2 and motorways. Some marvellous topiary can be seen at Champions Court, Mill Cottage and Sharsted Court. Apart from a short descent/ascent into Newnham the route is mainly on the level and over good ground. Meet in front of St Nicholas Church, Leeds (near Maidstone). Park in car park near church or courteously on street in the village. From the church we head westwards to find Stoneacre near Otham. We than head eastwards to find Leeds Castle which we circumnavigate to return to the start of our walk. Two historical buildings are seen on this walk (Stoneacre, a 15th century Yeoman's house that is open from late March to early October and the 12th century Leeds Castle) through mainly farmland and orchards. Total ascent approximately 480 feet. Pub at end with lunches available (booking recommended).

Meet in front of All Saints Church in Wouldham. Park courteously on the street or in village. From Wouldham we head up to the North Downs Way and follow it for a short way before dropping down to the River Medway, just past Starkeys. We then follow the Medway Valley Walk back to Wouldham. Total ascent approx. 380 feet. This is an undemanding little canter for those who have acquired the characteristics of a 'couch potato' over the festive period, or who may have resolved to acquire a lithe athletic body during 2010 in preparation for 2012! (Did you know that the word 'canter' comes from Canterbury - to ride at the pace of a Canterbury Pilgrim?). Pub at end.

Meet outside "The George Inn" PH at Newnham, near Doddington. Park considerately to east of PH. "Snowdrop Walk" via Sharsted Court, Sharsted Wood, Kingsdown Church, Great Higham and Doddington Place. This is an undulating walk through farmland, woodland and open countryside. One steep ascent at start. Passes three ancient churches and the grounds of Doddington Place. Carpets of snowdrops en route. Pub at end (lunches available).

Meet at Jeskyns Country Park car park just off the A2 (Gravesend East/Henhurst Street turn off). Walk the 'Darnley Trail' that links Cobham Park, Ranscombe Farm Reserve, Ashenbank Wood and Jeskyns Park. Bring picnic lunch. Pubs at end.

Meet in front of the Amazon & Tiger PH in Harvel. Landlord has NOT given permission to use his car park. Park courteously around the village. We head south from Harvel picking up the Weald Way passing Coldrum Long Barrow on the way to view the Addington Neolithic tombs. We return to Harvel via Trosley Court/Trosley Country Park. One short but very steep climb to reach the North Downs from Trosley Court. We will visit 2 of the 5 sites known tas the Medway Megaliths. The church at Trosley Court will provide a nice place for our picnic lunch. Bring picnic lunch. Pub at end - should be back in time.

Meet near school in Adisham. Park courteously in village. From Adisham the walk joins the North Downs Way for a short section by following little used footpaths and bridleways towards Barham Down via Ileden Farm. Return is via some interesting woodlands including Ileden Wood, Well Wood and Pitt Wood. Finish walk through Adisham Village. Good views, fairly flat, no stiles and sections can be muddy in wet weather. Bring picnic lunch. Pub at end (lunches available).

Meet and park in the public car park in Wye village (If car park is full, please park considerately on local roads). Walk leaves Wye through orchards and fields belonging to Wye College where they do experimental work. We then climb through woods onto Wye Downs with superb views to the south. We then descend onto the plain below and return to Wye past the buildings of Wye College and the local cricket field. (One steep climb  but worth it for the views). Views of buildings of Wye Agricultural College and occasional kite flying.Pub at end (lunches available).

Meet and park in car park behind Birling Village Church. Circular walk out via Birling Place Farm to pick-up the North Downs/Pilgrims Way continuing onto Trosley Court, returning via Long Barrow and Cleggetts Farm. Pub at end.

Meet and park behind the Community Hall in Kemsing. The walk starts off in an eastward direction toward Heaversham, through St Clare Estate, then north at West Yalden Farm and up onto the Downs. Then west along the top of the Downs and then south down hill through Kemsing to start. On this walk there are varied farm land, countryside, woodlands and Downs. Possibility of great views from the top of the Downs. Note: two steep hills (one up, one down) which may be slippery if it has rained. Numerous stiles and gates. Not suitable for dogs unless on a short lead at all times. Bring picnic lunch. Pub at end (lunches available).
